Post COP 15 Consultation workshop completed by analyzing the outcome of COP 15 from Nepal’s perspective and initiating the discussion on what should be the way ahead for Nepal.
Around 70 participants form government institutions, INGOs, NGOs, academic institution, youths and civil society were present in the program.
Giving the overview of COP 15, Mr. Ugan Manandher (WWF Nepal) said that the whole scenario of COP 15 changed when political leaders inter into the Bella Center for the high-level segment, and it turns into the places for the politics and power demonstration. He also said that the Copenhagen Accord, a loose political document comes as an outcome and it was out from the UNFCCC process.
Mr. Raju Pandit from UMN said that the COP 15 and Copenhagen Accord is simply a failure. He suggests that initiation from national level is required and raise the importance of national institutional mechanism to tackle this issue locally.
Moderator of panel discussion Mr. Bhushan Tuladhar (Coordinator, CCNN) said, “COP 15 is not just the conference in Bella center from 7 to 18 December, it is more than that and most important outcome for us is the cabinet meeting in Everest base camp and declaration from that meeting, we need to move ahead from that”.
Dr. Uday Raj Sharma (Secretary, Ministry of Environment) argue that, this is the most prepared and organized COP for Nepal, and there is no room for doing better than this in current situation. Taking lead in forming mountainous countries alliance, and chair of LDC in UNFCCC process can make the Nepal’s voice strong in future negotiation and we have to work for that, he shared. He also appreciate the contribution of Nepali youth in raising issues of Nepal in COP 15. In the other hand, Mr. Nimesh Regmi from NEFEJ point out that the capacity of environment ministry itself needs to be enhance. There should be the long term and clear strategic view in such issues, he added.
Mr. Gehendra Gurung from practical action emphasized that Nepali NGOs and INGOs have to focus on research and there need to be more exercise in these issues. Mr. Dipesh Chapagain from NYCA shares that, the individual commitment is most important to tackle this global issue and initiation should be come from every individual and nation. He also emphasize that the role of youth is very important and youth climate movement needs to be bolster in Nepal.
The different activities organized in Kathmandu and Copenhagen to pressurize the COP 15 was share by Mr. Pankaj K C and Mr. Avishek Shrestha in this program.
Nepalese Youth for Climate Action (NYCA) and Climate Change Network Nepal (CCNN) in coordination with Clean Energy Nepal (CEN) organized this program and WWF Nepal, Oxfam GB Nepal and Embassy of Finland supported on organizing it.
