Climate
Change
Although Nepal produces negligible amount of green
house gases, it is very vulnerable to the impacts of
climate change. CEN is active in researching climate
change related issues following the climate change debate
and raising awareness on climate change related issues.
CEN is a member of Climate Action Network South Asia

closely with WWF on climate change awareness raising
campaign in schools and colleges of Kathmandu .

a network of organizations and professionals working
in the field of air quality, research and training.
Ca mpaign for Vehicle Emission Control
The number of vehicles in Kathmandu is increasing
at an alarming rate of 16 percent per year. The public
transportation system is in a mess and although Kathmandu
is one of the most ideal cities for electric vehicles,
the number of EVs has decreased in the last two years
and even the 25 year old trolley buses have stopped
operating. This campaign aims to control vehicle emission
by promoting environment friendly means of transportation
such as EVs, bicycles and public an effective public
transportation system.

Campaign for Cleaner Production in Brick
Industry
CEN advocated for the immediate closure of illegal
and more pollution causing brick kilns in Kathmandu
. Because of rigorous opposition from environmentalist,
civil society and local people, Government imposed ban
over moving Bull Trench Kilns in 2003. At present CEN
is advocating for introduction and promotion of clean
and energy efficient technologies such as Vertical Shaft
Brick Kilns.

promote composting and recycling by producing and distributing
household compost bins and working with local communities
to manage waste at source.

e-magazine called CE News and sending it to about 3000
subscribers. Each issue of CE News is approximately
10 pages long packed with news, announcements, research
findings, interesting facts, useful links, as well as
prizes to be won through quiz of the week.

to learn practical aspects of environmental management,
do hands-on project work and conduct relevant research.
Publications
CEN has published its research findings as well as
a series of fact sheets on various issues related to
energy and environment.
Urban Greenery
With unplanned and haphazard urbanization all around
us, Kathmandu is left with very few open spaces where
we can get some fresh air. Even existing green patches
such as the Ring Road Green Belt is in a very poor state
due to lack of proper management. This campaign aims
to encourage people to plant trees and enhance existing
green spaces such as Green Belts and Parks. The campaign
includes "Plant a Tree for Kathamndu" programme
where citizens can plant a tree to celebrate an important
event or in the memory of a loved one.
Bio-gas Promotion in Kathmandu
Although bio-gas, produced from anaerobic digestion
of animal dung and other waste, is gaining popularity
in various parts of the country, it has yet to establish
itself in Kathmandu Valley . A recent study indicated
that there is potential for setting up 32,000 bio-gas
plants in Kathmandu and yet so far less than 1 percent
of this potential has been realized. This campaign aims
at encouraging and assisting rural families to set up
bio-gas plants and conducting research on the use of
bio-gas for managing urban waste. |
